GEZİ NOTLARI SEYAHAT

AVRUPA’NIN EN GÜZEL ŞEHİRLERİNDEN BİRİ – ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES OF EUROPE; PORTO

English: I have traveled a considerable amount of cities in Europe, and even have lived for over a month in some of them. Portugal is a country that I have never gone to , but  that I want to see it. But unlike many people, I have never wondered about Lisbon. I guess I did not wonder about it because I saw too many pictures and I listened too much things about it. But Porto … Porto was a different … I have never met too many people who have gone before … I had not any idea about it, i just knew that it has romantic name… I guess it always makes me more excited to go unknown. That’s why I bought a flight ticket in June without even asking Baransel. Because Turkish Airlines had a ticket campaign and I got tickets to Porto for 500TL.  When we went home in the evening, I said, “We will go to Porto in October, surpriseeee,” … I was very determined and confident. 🙂 However, because we went to a long vacation in Phuket & Krabi before Porto, we were able to made preparations to go to Porto last minute. Likewise at the Airbnb I could not find any house. Some houses which I find in the morning  , they were being full when i check them in the evening.  Because the reservation was being made. So we chose a relatively cheap, central and clean house among our limited options.

The house we stayed in Porto was in Ribeira in this neighborhood. This is also known as Porto’s Old Town.

PORTO’DA ULAŞIM – TRANSPORT FOR PORTO

English: There is a tiny things that will surely fascinate you in each of the sloping roads. Do not give up walking for that reason. We walked 50KM in 4 days despite all the sloping roads and it was very good for us.Though there is a very good subway and train line, you do not need to get on the subway or trains, believe me. For example, we went to the city center from the airport by the metro. Follow the directions of the arrows in the airport and get to the purple E line , you will arrive at the Sao Bento train station, which is covered with those wonderful wall tiles. Probably, the station you want to reach will be this central station, Sao Bento. You need to change to yellow line to reach this station, so you will get off in Trindade station. You should change to D yellow line and get off after 2 stops. They all last for about 45 minutes. You need to get off in Sao Bento and also have to walk all the sloping roads which is to reach to where you go. So what did we do? We got on the metro from the airport and got off in Trindade.

English: We firstly saw the wonderful mural that I wanted to see, its next to the station. In this beautiful air with our suitcases, we took its photo and then we went to our house by taxi. Let’s study a little mathematics together ? The metro ticket was € 2.25 per person. We paid 7 Euro , to go to our house in Riberia from Trindade by taxi. If we had come directly from the airport to the house, we would had paid 15 Euro! ? For that reason, we directly went back to the airport by taxi instead of metro. 🙂  I also recommend you if the time is precious for you and you do not want to carry your suitcases, I think you should take a direct taxi. You will arrive in 15 minutes!

PORTO’DA GÖRÜLMESİ GEREKEN YERLER / MUST SEE PLACES IN PORTO

English: Porto impressed me as “love at first sight”. I really loved the air, the streets, the people, the food, the wine. Besides all of them, it is a cheap country. Therefore, from the first minute until the last moment, it become a place “I do not want to return to”. I want to share with you some of the places you absolutely must see to understand these emotions.

Ribeira ve Dom Louis I Köprüsü / Riberia and Dom Louis I Bridges

English: Porto is a city where the river Douro is divided into two parts, one called Ribeira and the other called Gaia. It is a small city with old buildings, sloping streets, Galata and Karaköy atmosphere. Ribeira is almost like the old center. All the historical and touristic places are almost on this side.

English: The most famous of the bridges connecting the two parts is the Dom Louis I Bridge. The two-storeyed bridge passes cars and arcades from the lower floor, and trams and arcades pass from the upper floor. Walk on any floor of the bridge on an sunset and watch the river and the city in the middle of it!

Gün batımı Porto’ya gerçekten çok yakışıyor. Dilerseniz yol boyunca uzanan kafelerden birinde oturabilir, nehir kenarında marketten aldığınız şarabınızı yudumlayıp piknik yapabilir ya da köprünün tam altında yer alan Bar Ponte Pensil‘de bir akşamüstü kokteyli içebilirsiniz.

English: The sunset is really beautiful in Porto. You can sit in one of the cafés along the way, you can drink your wine which bought from the market on the riverside, have a picnic or have an afternoon cocktail at Bar Ponte Pensil, just below the bridge.

Gaia Bölgesi ve Port Wine Üreticileri / Gaia Region and Port Wine Producers

English: In Gaia, Porto’s famous Port Wine producers and restaurants are located by the river. In the back of the river also there are the new settlements. On this side, buildings, cars and even people are more well-maintained. You seem to have gone to Bebek from  Karaköy.

Port Wine, known as the Portuguese wine, is actually not exactly a wine. We can say like liquors. Its specialty is that kept in old whiskey barrels that bring from Scotland by Portuguese seamen. So its flavor is good. If you want to taste liquorice wine which is mostly shot before or after the meal, you can taste it in all the producer companies  in this region. The most famous is Sandeman. We have not tasted it but we have not forgotten to buy a bottle of Sandeman to our house.

On the other hand, if you walk on the top floor of the Dom Louis I bridge, you can go down on the cable car and enjoy the view from another angle at the same time.

If you go to this region for dinner, surely you should definitely have a dinner at Taberninha do Manel.

Sao Bento Tren İstasyonu / Sao Bento Train Station

English: You will admire it is really fascinating… I think, tiles used almost everywhere in Porto look much more beatiful on the walls of this train station. It takes you on a journey. The tiles which on the walls of these stations tell you the whole history of Portugal. All of the tiles of the station which is built at the end of the 19th century were placed by artist Jorge Colaco over a period of 11 years (1905-1916) .. But I want to tell you something else ? According to a myth, a Nun’s soul lives in this station … How?

Before the station was built, Actually there was the Ave Maria Monastery in stead of this building. Tens of priests and nuns had lived in this monastery. However, in 1834, all regular religious orders in Portugal were abolished by the decision of a politician named Joaquim António de Aguiar, also known as the “priest-killer”.  So, the decisions and orders of priests and nuns had lost its significance. However, it was decided to confiscate to properties belonging of religious people after the last religious person who live in the property die. Including this monastery. The last nun in this monastery had died in 1892, exactly 58 years after this decision was taken. Then the building had taken, and the construction of the train station which will taken place today’s, had started. According to legend, the soul of this nun still have lived in Sao Bento.  If you are in the station at a very quiet time, there are people who say that the nun’s prayers echoed from the station walls and came to your ear ? We did not hear it ? Obviously, can you find that station empty and quiet ? I’m not sure  🙂

English: On the other hand, it is possible to go almost anywhere from the train station. If you want to go to other cities, this will be the starting point. When we wanted to go to Aveiro, we went from this station. Before we left, I looked up all the hours and ticket prices on the website. I suggest you take a look at this site before you plan.

Carmo ve Carmelitas Kiliseleri / Carmo and Carmelitas Churches

Sol taraf Carmelitas Kilisesi (Igrajo do Carmelitas), sağ taraf ise Carmo Kilisesi (Igrajo do Carmo).

English: I think this is one of the most beautiful churches I’ve ever seen. If you do not look carefully, you actually think this is a single church. However, this building consists of two separate churches. They seem to be united because they are just the narrowest house in the world. Carmelitas Church on the left (Igrajo do Carmelitas) and Carmo Church on the right (Igrajo do Carmo). It was my favorite to be that the wonderful wall you saw in this photo belongs to Carmo Church.

Chapel of Souls

English: A wonderful church next to its name, I think because of those same wall tiles ! At the end of Rua de Santa Catarina, known as Porto’s shopping street, this church is 5 minutes away from Bolhao Market, one of the must-see buildings. There is not much in it  that will attract your interest, and it’s actually a pretty small church. But in a street you have never expected, it seems so beautiful and you are being fascinated!

Bolhao Market ve civarı / Bolhao Market and around

Burada Portekiz yerel tatlarına dair her şeyi bulabilirsiniz.

English: Those who go to Barcelona know the famous Mercat de la Boqueria on the La Rambla street. Here is Bolhao Market which is similar to it, a very nice shopping arcade where you can buy souvenirs, eat or shop for food. Here you can find everything about Portuguese local tastes.  The souvenirs were cheaper here than in other parts of the city. I’m telling you ?

In this famous shop right opposite the grocery store we had a break, to had a coffee and ate sandwich. We like it, be keep in mind!

The streets around Bolhao Market are very nice. Do not forget to get lost in the streets both for shopping and for seeing beatiful places/streets !

English: One day we had an incredible fog because of the change in temperature we experienced in Porto. On that day we saw a huge body of trees through the mist on the way home. When we went up the stairs and then we met that view of this photo. It was an incredibly beautiful. Later, I searched this park and I saw they had really diffrent a view of these trees all the seasons. I think you also should go!

Clerigos Kulesi ve Kilisesi / Clerigos Tower and Church

English: We just passed through the front of it saying that “time is of the essence” and, we did not climbed the tower. There is probably a very beautiful view, but we did not need it because we saw a very satisfying view from the top floor of the Dom Louis I Bridge.

In front of the church of Clerigos is a long sloping street. When you go down straight, you are all encounter to the Sao Bento station.

PORTO SOKAKLARI ve DENEMENİZ GEREKEN LEZZETLER / STREETS AND TASTES OF PORTO

English: We recommend Praça da Carlos Alberto, which is the most beautiful places of Porto and which is similar to Karaköy, in continuation of it that is Rua das Oliveiras, also Rua de Sa de Noronha and Rua Actor Joao Guedes situated in parallel. Definitely, you should do, have a breakfast at the Zenith Brunch & Cocktails Bar, a coffee break at Mustache, eat a meat burger at Steak N Shake, drink a coffee at the Cafe Progresso which is opposite of it, or a tomato soup with basil sauce.

Biraz aşağı indiğinizde ise Rua das Carmelitas‘a ulaşıyorsunuz.

English: Rua da Conceição is another street which both the beautiful shops and the beautiful cafés are located. Go to Mercado 48 that is one of my favorite shops here. There is Candelabro, a great place to buy snacks and appetizer for wine on the corner of the street. Also Champanheria da Baixa which is located next to it , is a champagne café for champagne lovers. Mon Pere Vintage, Porto’s most famous vintage shop, which organizes second-hand bazaar every month, is also located in this area.

When you go down, you reach Rua das Carmelitas. Here you can find the very famous bookstore Livraria Lello. We did not get in, although we had tickets, because we could not get into it. It was like there were kilometers of queues and this queue did not decrease any time of day. Instead of losing time for that reason, our tickets gone for nothing. Ticket was 4 Euros per person. First you buy a ticket in the shop on the left side, then you join the queue which is starting from the front of the door on the right. So why do people go into this queue like crazy? Yes, as far as I can see from the photos that the goers put on, it’s a very nice bookshop. It is also a source of inspiration for many writers. The most memorable is Harry Potter’s writer and creator J.K. When Rowlings lived in Porto, he had constantly come to this bookstore, inspired by it, and said he started writing Harry Potter here. That’s why it’s an incredible popular place. Time is of the essence for us. No matter how beautiful it was, we thought it was not worth waiting for its long queue.

Livraria Lello yanında yer alan A Vida Portuguese isimli mağazaya mutlaka girin. Biz bayıldık! / You should definitely go to the A Vida Portuguese-named shop next to Livraria Lello. We loved it!

Sıradan bir Mc Donalds’dan epey farklı 🙂 / On the other hand, I would advise you to go to the Mc Donalds Imperial, which is also in this area, even just to see it. It’s quite different from an ordinary Mc Donalds.

We also felt  that the same thing we felt with Livraria Lello , at the famous Majestic Cafe on Rua de Santa Catarina, a shopping street. You can not believe the queue in front. We did not get into it for that reason. ? But keep in mind, it reminded me a lot the Cafe Imperial in Prague.

Sao Bento Tren İstasyonunun hemen karşısında yer alan trafiğe kapalı Rua das Flores adlı cadde, hem tatlı kafeleri hem de hediyelik eşya dükkanlarıyla yine meşhur caddelerden. / Located right across from the Sao Bento Train Station and the pedestrianized is Rua das Flores street is also one of the famous streets for both with its sweet cafés and souvenir shops.

Özellikle Portekiz’in geleneksel tatlısı Nata’yı denemek isterseniz, en iyi nata dükkanı olan Nata Lisboa (The World Needs Nata) ‘yı tavsiye ederiz.

English: Especially if you want to taste Portugal’s traditional dessert Nata, we recommend  Nata Lisboa (The World Needs Nata) that the best nata shop. We tried the Portuguese Super Bock, which has an unfortunate name beside it. Obviously there is not a characteristic of Portuguese beers in general. Still, if you want to try it, we recommend the Imperial brand, which you can find very easy in the markets.

English: If you are looking for a nice place to have dinner,  we recommend those places which are on Rua das Flores. Here we recommend Cantina 32, which is we also went and recommended to us. Definitely, make a reservation. The only things you need to taste here are the banana butter, squid and octopus! Do not forget to eat cheesecake afterwards!

After dinner, if you want to drink something, dance, listen to music, you have to go to two parallel streets which are pedestrianized, name of them are Rua de Candido dos Reis and Galeria de Paris. These two streets connect to the street where Livraria Lello is. It is very central. There are night clubs and bars side by side on these streets. But remember that nightlife in Portugal will start after 12am. Because, they have dinner at a late night according to our country. So if you finish eating and go at 11pm, you have a cocktail on a relatively desolate street. If you want to see the crowd, you have to go at a later hour.

Another suggestion is that if you want a more hovel place on the lawn outdoors, I would recommend the place which named Base for both sunset and evening.

Sakın endişe etmeyin 🙂 / Apart from these, if you go to Porto without even planning, the city offers you what it already has. Do not worry ?
